2019 Chinese New Year Celebration

On February 16, 2019, the Confucius Institute at the University of Saskatchewan, together with FSCCO (Federation of Saskatoon Chinese Canadian Organizations), co-organized the “2019 Chinese New Year Celebration” at TCU Place. Four local arts groups and two specially invited artists from China presented a wonderful evening of art entertainment to more than 1,000 audience.

This celebration has been widely recognized by the local communities. The organizing committee received Congratulation Letters from the Canadian Premier Minister Mr. Justin Trudeau, the Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General in Calgary Ms. LU Xu, the Governor of Saskatchewan Province Mr. Scott Moe, and the Mayor of Saskatoon City Mr. Charlie Clark.

Some distinguished guests were invited to make the opening remarks, including the Consul General Ms. LU Xu, MP for Saskatoon West Ms. Sheri Benson, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Saskatoon Westview Mr. David Buckingham, Deputy Mayor of Saskatoon Mr. Randy Donauer, and the U of S Provost and VP Academic Mr. Anthony Vannelli.

A variety of Chinese traditional art performances were put on at the celebration including lion dance, folk dance, Chinese martial arts, Beijing Opera, Face-changing, etc. The USask CI art groups brought to the celebration two performances: “Drunken Lion Dance”, and folk dance “Meiluozi”.

Apart from the performances by the USask CI, the Chinese Dance School of Saskatchewan performed folk dances “Happy Spring Festival”, “Playful Flowers”, and “Waist Drum and Dragon Dance”; the Saskatoon Chinese Martial Arts Academy performed Chinese Boxing, Cudgel Play, and Taichi Boxing; the Baydo Beijing Opera Club performed Beijing Opera “The Drunken Beauty”; the specially-invited artist Mr. JIANG Jin performed Stick Acrobatic Play “Return of the Monkey King”, magic show and Face-changing; the specially-invited violin magic Mr. LIN Feng performed “Crazy Violin”.
