China’s Ambassador Attended the U of S International Symposium

Meeting with the Directors of the Confucius Institutes in Canada

On August 16, 2017, one day before the opening of the International Symposium, Ambassador Lu Shaye and Minister Counsellor of Education Yang Xinyu had a meeting with 12 directors from 9 Confucius Institutes in Canada, discussing about the achievements and challenges of the Confucius Institutes in Canada in helping promote cultural exchanges and Chinese language teaching.

The International Symposium was co-organized by the U of S College of Education, College of Arts and Science, the Confucius Institute, the Johnson Shoyama Graduate College of Public Policy, and the Department of Sociology, in collaboration with Beijing Institute of Technology, Huazhong Agricultural University from China and University of Lagos from Nigeria. Many institutions contribute to this symposium, including the Confucius Institute Headquarters, the Office of the U of S Vice-President Research, the U of S Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, the City of Saskatoon Mayor’s Office, and Tourism Saskatoon.

The Opening Ceremony was held in the morning of August 17, 2017. His Excellency Ambassador Lu Shaye, the U of S President Peter Stoicheff, and the President Assistant Long Teng from Beijing Institute of Technology spoke at the ceremony.

In the Plenary Session immediately after the Opening Ceremony, four keynote speakers made their speech, the U of S Vice-President Research Karen Chad on “International Research: Connecting the World”, the U of S Professor of Sociology Harley Dickinson on “Managing the Confucius Institute Program: A Mixed Strategy Involving Centralization and Decentralization and Standardization and Localization Initiatives”, the U of S Confucius Institute Chinese Co-Director Ning Liu on “Internationalization and Localization: The Role of the U of S Confucius Institute”, and the U of S Professor Emeritus Peter Li on “Confucius Institute under Siege: From Trojan Horse to Sinophobia”.

Apart from the keynote speakers, more than 50 scholars from Canada and China delivered their speeches in 9 concurrent sessions. The more than 90 attendees made full use of the time in and out of the sessions within the two-day conference to exchange ideas and seek further collaborations in academic research.
