On February 17, 2017, the Confucius Institute at the University of Saskatchewan went to First Nation Chief Mistawasis School to deliver Chinese cultural classes on invitation.

First Nation Chief Mistawasis School is about 130 kilometers from Saskatoon. This school has been celebrating Chinese New Year for more than ten years, but this year is the first time that they had Chinese volunteer teachers to give them Chinese cultural classes. The CI Chinese Co-Director, the Administrative Coordinator and four volunteer teachers went to participate in this event.

The volunteer teachers firstly taught Chinese New Year celebration traditions to the students there and then taught how to make Chinese dragons to five classes ranging from kindergarten children to grade 4 students. After the lessons, the volunteer teachers performed “Kung-Fu Panda” dances after the dragon parade by the students with their self-made dragons at the school gym for the school Chinese New Year Assembly. Both the staff members and the students there were greatly impressed by the lessons and performance and they expressed their wishes to have more of such lessons in the near future.
