2019 Chinese New Year Celebration

On February 9, 2019, the Confucius Institute at the University of Saskatchewan, together with Chinese Dance School of Saskatchewan and Qipao Club of Happy-Life Wealth Management Co. Ltd., co-organized the “2019 Chinese New Year Celebration” Evening at Lakeview Church. More than 700 audience watched the evening performance by twelve art groups from the local Chinese community, the First Nations community, the Russian community, the Scotland community, and the Bangladesh community, sponsored by a dozen of local enterprises and organizations.

At the start of the celebration evening, the video by the Canadian Premier Minister Mr. Justin Trudeau to bless the Chinese for a happy new year was shown on the screen. Then was the congratulation letter by the Consul General at Calgary Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China Ms. LU Xu. The Mayor of Saskatoon Mr. Charlie Clark, the Associate Vice-President of the University of Saskatchewan Professor Darcy Marciniuk, the representative from the Education Office of the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa made respective opening remarks to the celebration.

A variety of art performances were put on stage, including dance, Beijing Opera, Chinese martial arts, chorus, musical performance, Qipao Show, etc. The U of S CI performed the Lion and Dragon Dance, the Chinese folk dance “Beauty Chant”, and the pop dance “Babe”.

Apart from the art performance by the USask CI art groups, the Chinese Dance School of Saskatchewan, the Qipao Club of Happy-life Wealth Management Co. Ltd., Saskatoon Spring Choir, Saskatoon Children’s Choir, Baydo Chinese Drama Club, Saskatoon Chinese Martial Arts School, as well as the First Nations Art Group, Saskatoon Scotland Art Group, Russian Kalinka Folk Group, and Bangladesh Dance Group joined in the performance of the celebration evening.
